Summer is finally here. As the weather warms up, most people are starting to think about taking holidays. Maybe you have been planning an annual camping trip with friends or thinking about bringing the family to a favorite vacation spot. Whatever your plans, there are a few important things you should keep in mind before you set out on your road trip this summer.
Make sure your car is in good working order. Nothing throws a wrench into your plans like some unexpected car trouble. Bring your car into your mechanic for a full inspection and tune up. Make sure your tires are in good shape and all your fluids have been topped up before you hit the road. Take a look in your trunk to make sure your spare tire is intact and double check to be sure that you have everything you need in case of a flat.
Pack an emergency kit. If you are planning on traveling through remote areas, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Emergency car kits are available at most big box stores, but you may have enough items around your home to make your own. Some important things to include are booster cables, a flashlight, a reflective safety vest, a blanket and work gloves.
Get ready to navigate. Some people rely on their GPS, while others like to travel the old fashioned way with maps. Either way, it’s a good idea to review your route ahead of time. Plan your departure time to avoid rush hour traffic, and designate someone other than the primary driver to keep you on course. Using online mapping tools, you can plan your route and know exactly how long it will take you to travel from one destination to another. Print your maps or save them to your phone so you always have them handy.
Reserve your accommodations. Whether you are planning a weekend camping trip, or traveling between hotels, it’s always a good idea to book your accommodations ahead of time. After a long day on the road, it’s nice to know you have somewhere to put your feet up. Hotels, campgrounds and bed and breakfasts book up quickly in the summertime and having a plan in place will help you avoid disappointment.
Give yourself lots of time. Like the saying goes, “It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.” If you are heading to a new destination for the first time, there will be plenty of interesting towns and attractions along the way. Allow yourself enough time to make a few stops to break up the long drive and give yourself a chance to rest. With so many beautiful places within driving distance, you never know what you might see along the way.
