Let's talk A/C

Let's talk A/C

by Ute Lindner - The Auto Station Ever wondered about your A/C in the car? I have! Safety feature The A/C is one of these features that I often thought of as a wonderful luxury and never as a safety feature. And the more I am learning about cars I am realizing how important a feature it is. Combats driver fatigue from overheated vehicles Defogs the windshields – increased visibility How it works Turn the A/C on and the compressor compresses the system’s refrigerant (Freon) raising its temperature. It loses heat as it flows through the condenser. Next it passes through the receiver/dryer where contaminants and moisture are removed, and then on to the expansion valve/accumulator where the refrigerant is slowed down further, causing it to lose pressure and temperature before it gets to the evaporator. The evaporator further lowers the refrigerants temperature and, additionally, removes moisture from th ... read more

Staying Safe On The Road

Staying Safe On The Road

Avoiding Preventable Accidents and Staying Safe on the Road According to Ontario Ministry of Transportation, there are over 80,000 vehicle accidents each year in Ontario. Although we have some of the safest roads in the world, there are still plenty of things that drivers can do to increase their awareness and improve their vehicle’s safety. Most accidents are preventable. Whether you have been driving for a few months or many years, it’s always a good time to remind yourself to have good driving habits. Wear your seatbelt. Buckling up only takes a few seconds, but it can truly be a lifesaver. Even if you are only driving a few minutes away from home, putting on your seatbelt should be a regular habit for all drivers and passengers. Adjust your speed for bad weather. Snow and rain can dualistically reduce your ability to stop and impede your visibility. Even if your car has good tires, you can’t always trust that other drivers can ... read more

Taking Care of Your Tires

Taking Care of Your Tires

Taking Care of Your Tires – Your Car’s Most Valuable Safety Feature When it comes to maintaining your car, the mechanical components under the hood usually take priority. Most people make a conscious effort to keep up with their oil changes, but it’s important to not overlook another very important element of your vehicle – your tires. Your ability to control your vehicle depends on the traction between your tires and the road. Properly maintained tires are essential for your safety, fuel efficiency, and your car’s optimum performance. Unlike many other areas in North America, vehicles in Southern Ontario are exposed to a wide range of elements. Our tires are in constant contact with hot pavement in the summertime, and drive us through freezing cold winters, complete with icy roads covered with harsh chemicals. It’s no wonder that our tires start looking worn out after just a few years on the road. To ensure optimum performance and safety, tires mu ... read more

Tire Speed Rating

Tire Speed Rating

Your Performance Rating "GET YOUR FREE TIRE QUOTE IN SECONDS" What is it about your tire that lets your vehicle brake in time when a child darts onto the street, or swerve to miss a deer bolting from a bush? It’s the stability of your tire’s tread, the construction of the carcass, the compound of the rubber. It’s your tire speed rating, or, to be more accurate, your tire’s performance rating. People refer to that last letter of the tire size on the sidewall of your tires as ‘tire speed rating’—the maximum speed a tire can sustain for a certain period of time without risk of tire failure. But it’s not just about speed. It’s about performance— how your tires get rid of heat and how they brake, corner, grip and swerve just in time. In fact, your safety depends on the performance rating of your tires, and yet many drivers aren’t aware of the role they play in keeping their rubber on ... read more

Cornering Grip

Cornering Grip

It isn’t the size but the quality construction of your tire that’s going to help you take sharp turns safely. If you’re heading up a highway ramp at high speeds and you’re not ready for the tight curve ahead, your vehicle will stay on the road, or not, because of your tire’s grip. Under force, the shape and contact patch of a lower-rated tire will change, reducing your traction. As well, your vehicle operates safely because of several systems—anti-lock brakes, stability control—that can only work with the traction limits of your vehicle’s tires. Under-inflation may become an issue because of a driver’s negligence or damage. Any tire loses air over time – usually 1-2 psi per month. About 1 psi also goes away with every 10°F drop in temperature. If the tire has damage, air loss may be significantly larger, causing extreme lack of pressure sooner. Most tires have about 30-35 psi pressure standard, and if under-inflation re ... read more
