Increased safety with working signal and brake lights

The Long and Lighted Road: Lighting and Driving Brake and Turn Signals Automotive Signal Lights Although motorists often complain that some drivers don't know they exist or how to use them, all cars these days come equipped with blinking turn signals letting the car behind you know what you're up to. That certainly wasn't the case with the earliest cars, though. I still remember drivers using standard hand signals into the early sixties — you know, the ones you had to learn to pass your driver's test: for left you put your left arm straight out the window parallel to the ground, for right you rested your left elbow on the window, raising your forearm up with your hand open. And if you wanted to stop you signaled that intention, as well, by putting your left arm out parallel to the road and angling it downward. These hand signals were required whether it was sunny and fair or pouring buckets. Drivers of early historical cars, in fact, still have to know and use ... read more

Wiper Blade Replacement

Windscreen wipers are an invaluable part of any vehicle, providing the driver with a clear, unobstructed view of the road just when it is needed most. Whether it is rain, sleet, snow or even dust or leaves which are covering your windscreen, the wiper blades will quickly and efficiently clear the obstruction, meaning you can continue your journey in safety. However, of all the parts of a car which are subject to wear and tear, windscreen wipers are perhaps the most fragile. Manufactured from thin rubber, they are designed to operate smoothly on the windscreen without damaging the surface of the glass, yet despite their fragility they are often required on a daily basis, possibly for long periods of time, during wet weather. In winter they become frozen to the glass and in summer they are used to help to clean the windscreen, while being subjected to high temperatures. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that windscreen wipers do not last indefinitely and require regul ... read more

Night Driving Tip

We've all had that blinded by the light sensation when driving at night. Whether the car behind has the high beams set or perhaps it's just some hilly driving that's causing a blinding flash, anyone that having experienced the night white out will not likely forget it soon. Fortunately, most modern cars have a built-in night driving device to avoid this dangerous driving distraction. In many cases, the newer vehicle platforms have a specifically designed automatic lens adjustment that defeats the glare that can cause the well documented night blindness condition in an unsuspecting driver. However, many of the entry level vehicles that are very common and highly popular are still fitted with a simple lever to position the mirror lens to the night driving position. Once set in this rotation, the focal length of the mirror is adjusted downward focusing any reflected light slightly down from eye level. This setting tends to darken the view across the entire range of the ... read more

Maintenance

I can see clearly now..

The salty season is still upon us. With the recent use of brine and beet juice by the MTO to advance winter road maintenance efforts we have a new problem - how to get it off the windshield. This stuff has been known to create all kinds of blurred streaky windows that can impair driver visibility and compromise safety. Yes, the sticky slime that gets sprayed up on our windshields these days is harder to clear than the slushy stuff of old. This presents challenges to wiper systems, and puts washer fluid to a new test. Lest we lose sight of the horizon. Or the on coming traffic for that matter. The use of water displacement products applied directly on the windshield can have a dramatic effect on the wiper system effectiveness. Silicone base products that bond to the glass have been proven to offer great relief from stubborn streaky sleet that otherwise can blind us. The application of most modern products is simply wipe on with a wet cloth, let dry, then buff to a transparent f ... read more
