WHEN SHOULD I DO MY SEASONAL WINTER TIRE CHANGEOVER?

Although there are no laws in Ontario to obligate consumers to switch over, the rule of thumb applies that drivers should change their tires when daytime temperatures fall below 7-degree Celsius. At this temperature, roads and pavements are hardened and regular all-season tires are less effective at providing you with the traction needed to drive on cold winter roads.

Now, you’ve probably noticed that we have not mentioned ice and snow yet… And that’s where the difference lies. Winter Tires help improve traction when roads get colder, not only when snow hits. So this winter, skip the line-ups and plan ahead for your family’s safety by performing your changeover when the cold arrives – not the snow!

The same temp guideline applies to getting out of your winter tires and back into summers.  The general rule for the Burlington area is 7 consecutive days with the daytime temperature rises above 7 degrees C is the time to switch back to summer tires. Again, avoid the rush as an occasional dusting of late spring snow is not really a concern if the road temperature warms.

SHOULD I BUY WINTER TIRES?

Ever wonder that? If so, you are not alone. There are a few key things you should know about winter tires that will help you define whether or not the investment is worth it for you.

The amazing traction of winter tires in cold weather is often as much as 60 ft improvement in stopping distance from 50 Kmh.  Winter tires are always less costly than bumper repair.  All of our tire wizards are happy to explain the advantages of cold weather tires, snow tires, and ice tires.  It is important to consider the different benefits of each type of tire to ensure you select the right tire for your driving needs.

RUBBER COMPOUND

Winter tires are built with a different rubber mixture – called the rubber compound – that is better suited for colder temperatures. Usually, winter tires will have a rubber compound that will stay soft and pliable even when rolling on cold and icy pavements. Differences in these cold weather recipes now include additives like silica, walnut shell, and other abrasives to really offer traction advantages.  These are not the winter tires your grandfather used to recommend.

AGGRESSIVE TREAD DESIGN CALLS FOR ENHANCED TRACTION

The tread design on winter tires will also be fairly different than what is found on all-season tire products. The big difference are those tiny sipes you see in every quality winter tire tread.  Yes, sipes are the tiny grooves that made the deck shoe the wet surface choice of every boatsman this side of Columbus.  These tiny grooves wick away slushy water from the contact interface between the tire and the road and provide that “stuck to the road” feeling that you expect from a winter tire. The geometry of the tread pattern will often be more aggressive and tread will often feature things like clunky tread blocks, larger spacing with biting edges to the tread block.

MOUNTAIN SNOWFLAKE CERTIFICATION

Watch for the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake appearing on the sidewall of winter tires. This certification indicates that the tires have been tested by the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) and meet a minimum 10% higher stopping and handling performance in cold weather, icy conditions than the standards for regular tires.
